Overview

A key component to an effective drug diversion prevention program, WasteLog® provides instant verification of controlled substance waste and returns to ensure a solution has not been tampered with.

WasteLog® uses the latest absorption spectroscopy technology enabling highly accurate identification of low dose concentrations. Fast, robust and highly accurate measurement results are immediately presented on the system’s touchscreen for real-time analysis. This data can be transferred to any third-party analytics software platform. To keep pace with busy pharmacy departments, WasteLog® enables new drug calibrations to be seamlessly created onsite. When integrated with Codonics Safe Label System, prepared syringes can be scanned for automated documentation of the drug name and concentration into WasteLog® to improve the drug assay workflow.

WasteLog® & Safe Label System Integration

How we solve the problem

Codonics and Pharmacolog have entered into an exclusive partnership agreement providing exclusive sales, support and marketing for Pharmacalog’s WasteLog®, an efficient, affordable diversion control assay device. When integrated with Codonics Safe Label System, the combined solution provides an end-to-end diversion control system with the most efficient workflow. Together, these technologies will play a critical role in addressing the challenges hospitals face preventing diversion of controlled substances.

WasteLog® is a laboratory instrument that uses UV spectroscopy technology and enables pharmaceutical waste to be analyzed and verified prior to disposal by injecting a small volume from a syringe (0.3-0.5 mL) into a cuvette to verify the contents, thereby ensuring the drug has not been tampered with. In < 4 seconds, WasteLog® provides a robust and highly accurate result. Not only is it fast, accurate and reliable, it’s easy to use and cloud-based (with no subscription contracts) so there is no formulary management.

A hospital can implement Safe Label System and WasteLog® at the same time, or may choose to implement one product at a time. When installed together, the system is integrated to combine electronic safety checks during medication preparation and administration with better management of the medical waste workflow to provide a robust, proven and modern approach to drug diversion.

WasteLog Unit

How it works

During medication preparation, medications are dispensed from the anesthesia cart

SLS

On Dispense visual and audible verification of the drug-in-hand acts as a second set of eyes to improve safety and reduce errors.

A full-color, ready-to-apply label is presented to the clinician which contains all of the elements required by The Joint Commission International. The special 2D barcode included on every label enables integration with WasteLog® for diversion control.

SLS Wave

Prior to administration, Codonics SLS-WAVE scanner enables “hands-free” scanning of the syringe label barcode. This provides electronic documentation of the drug name, concentration and time-stamp in the AIMS/EMR such as Epic, Cerner and Medical Systems.

NuboMed

Once the case is complete, unused narcotics are placed into the waste bin.

Scan

Once In Pharmacy, or anywhere returns occur, wasted syringes are scanned, enabling instant electronic identification of the drug name and concentration of the syringe contents.

Cuvette Sample

A small sample (0.3-0.5mL) is injected into the cuvette.

WasteLog

WasteLog® uses UV and visible light absorption spectroscopy to analyze the sample and measure concentrations. It is seen as a stronger technique than Raman or Refractometry, two other types of technologies to determine substances.

WasteLog Test

With the cuvette placed in the WasteLog unit, results are provided in seconds. The cuvettes keep the machine clean and reduce contamination and can be capped and saved for further analysis.

Samples either pass or fail. A few clicks on the touch screen initiates the test. A failed result gives indicators and provides opportunity for in-depth analysis. Immediate viewing the curves can help to understand the failed result.
